Preparing for Your Appointment

It is recommended in the NICE guidelines NG98 (evidence-based best practice recommendations) that your ears are prepared with a wax-softening agent for 4 to 5 days before your wax removal appointment. We’ve found that proper preparation significantly improves results and usually leads to a straightforward, safe, and pain-free procedure.

We advise using simple olive oil with either a dropper or spray format, available from your local chemist. Apply two drops/sprays of room temperature olive oil into each ear twice a day ahead of your appointment, including the day itself.

To apply drops:-

Lie down and gently pull your ear backward and upward to straighten the canal.
Place 2 drops into the ear and gently massage the area just in front of your ear.
Remain lying down for 10 minutes, then wipe away any excess oil.
Do not place cotton wool in your ear, as this absorbs the oil and stops it from working effectively.

Repeat the process on the other ear if needed.

The spray version is often easier to use for those with mobility issues as you can use it sitting up or when treating children who may not remain still for 10 minutes.

Please note: olive oil drops may not be suitable for everyone. We’ll advise you if this applies when you book your appointment.

This is a detailed visual examination using either a manual or digital otoscope. This non-invasive process allows us to look directly into your ear canal and assess the condition of your ears. You’ll be able to see the inside of your ear on screen, providing clarity and peace of mind. If wax is present or other issues are identified, we will discuss the most suitable treatment options with you.
