Everything You Need to Know About Ear Wax Removal

We understand that ear care can raise a few questions. Here are answers to some of the most common queries about our services, appointments, and what to expect when you choose Aures Ear Health.

I think I have part of my hearing aid stuck in my ear!

Common signs include muffled hearing, discomfort in your ear and a missing dome!  do not worry, we can get it out usually with water irrigation.  Sometimes it may also need a small instrument to ease it out but we can help with this problem.  Book an assessment visit and we can take a look and make a plan to remove it.

Common signs include hearing loss,  muffled hearing, ear pain or discomfort, dizziness, tinnitus, itching or a feeling of fullness in the ear.  If you’re unsure, we recommend booking an ear assessment to find out for certain.

No. Most people find the water irrigation process comfortable. You may feel slight pressure or a tickling sensation, but it should not be painful. Microsuction is a more noisy procedure due to the suction machine.  Both procedures will be demonstrated to you before starting to make you aware of what to expect.  We always prioritise your comfort and stop if you feel any discomfort.

Appointments typically last between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on whether one or both ears need treatment and the severity of the wax build-up.

A build up of wax is more likely to occur in older adults, hearing aid users, earplug and ear pod users, in people who insert instruments or cotton buds into their ears and those with  narrow ear canals.

A hot and/or dusty working environment will encourage more ear wax production, as will those of you who who sweat a lot, such as gym user or menopause suffers.

Those of you with itchy ears and dry skin conditions will also be prone to a build up of  wax.

Other things such as anxiety, stress, dietary or hereditary factors may also encourage this build up of wax.

We advise the use of room temperature Olive oil, either with a dropper or the spray version, 2 drops twice a day for 5 days prior to your appointment.

  • lie down on your side with the affected ear upwards
  • gently pull the ear backwards and upwards
  • using room temperature olive oil and the dropper, drop 1-2 drops, or 2 sprays, into the ear canal
  • gently massage the area in front of your ear
  • remain lying down for 10 mins
  • sit up slowly and wipe away any excess oil
  • DO NOT put any cotton wool into your ear as this will just soak up the oil you have just instilled.

Repeat the procedure on the opposite ear if needed.

You do not have to lie down if using a spray version of olive oil so this can be useful for people with mobility problems or without assistance.  Children are more likely to accept the spray too.

What methods are used to remove wax?

We use three main methods: water irrigation, micro suction and manual instrumentation. The most appropriate technique—or a combination—is selected based on your needs. Sometimes a second appointment and further oil preparation will be required for stubborn wax build ups.  Good olive oil preparation, as instructed when you make your appointment, will always make wax removal easier.

Water irrigation involves the use of warm water being gently sprayed  into the the ear to flush out the wax.

Micro-suction involves the use of a low pressure suction machine and a fine tube to gently remove the wax.

Instrumentation is used to remove wax close to the entrance of your ear with specialised instruments.

We will go through an assessment when you make your appointment.  Not all methods will be suitable for everyone depending on your previous medical history and your ear complaint.  We will discuss the most appropriate wax removal method for you and make the decision together.

Yes, in most cases you can go straight back to your usual activities, including driving. If any temporary issues are anticipated, we will let you know.

Our service is typically aimed at adults but it is possible to remove wax from children’s ears.  If your child is experiencing ear issues for the first time then we recommend contacting your GP for advice to start with.  If the GP is happy for your child to go ahead with wax removal then an assessment will be made by us to make sure the child can sit still long enough to cooperate safely with the procedure.  Sometimes the olive oil preparation on its own will soften the wax enough to allow it to move to the outer ear and be wiped away with a tissue.

Ear wax is produced by your ear as part of a natural process.  Normally it is eliminated spontaneously helped by the natural movements of your jaw such as chewing and talking. It contains old skin cells, dust, hair and foreign objects collected from your ear canal as it makes its way out.  This is then mixed with the wax secretion near the entrance to your ear.

It takes on average 12 months for a old skin cell to move from the bottom of your ear canal to the entrance of your ear to be expelled.

The purpose of ear wax is to protect, clean, lubricate and prevent some infections in our ear canals.

The application of olive oil drops or spray for 5 days before your appointment will make the removal procedure much easier.

Olive oil softens the built up wax and encourages the natural movement of wax from your ear canal.
